Of all the Bhasmas in Ayurveda, Heerak Bhasma is the one people find hardest to believe in. Diamond, the hardest natural substance known, turned into a powder fine enough to take with honey? It sounds improbable, and that is part of why it is so rarely prescribed and so expensive.
This guide explains what Heerak Bhasma is, how the classical texts describe it, and why it should only ever be taken under the close supervision of an experienced Ayurvedic physician.
What is a Bhasma?
A Bhasma is a metal, mineral or gem that has been purified (shodhana) and then reduced to ash (marana) through repeated cycles of grinding with herbal juices and controlled heating. Rasashastra, the branch of Ayurveda that works with these substances, describes the process in detail for each material.
The goal is to transform the raw substance into a form the texts consider safe and usable as medicine. Properly prepared Bhasmas are extremely fine powders. Poorly prepared ones are not, which is why quality matters so much.
What is Heerak Bhasma?
Heerak (also written Hirak) means diamond, and Vajra, another name for it, means thunderbolt, a reference to its hardness. Rasashastra classes diamond among the Ratnas (precious gems), and texts such as Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya and Rasa Tarangini describe how it should be purified and processed.
Because diamond is so hard, the preparation is long and demanding, and the classical literature ranks Heerak Bhasma among the most potent of all Ratna Bhasmas. A very small amount goes a long way, which is why the Patanjali pack holds only 300 mg.
Traditional use
In the classical view, Heerak Bhasma is used:
- as a powerful Rasayana for strength, vitality and longevity
- to support immunity and resilience
- by experienced physicians in serious, long-standing conditions, always as part of a supervised plan alongside other treatment
These are traditional descriptions. There is very little modern research on Heerak Bhasma, and it is not a proven treatment for any disease. It should never replace treatment from your regular doctor. Be very cautious of anyone selling it as a cure for cancer, heart disease or any other serious illness.
Quality and sourcing
With a Bhasma this rare and costly, sourcing is everything:
- Buy only from a licensed manufacturer. The label should show the manufacturer’s name, address, drug licence number, batch number and dates.
- Look for an intact seal on both the outer box and the container.
- Ignore loose or “homemade” Heerak Bhasma. There is no way for you to check what it contains.
- Price is a clue. Genuine Heerak Bhasma is expensive because of the raw material and the long preparation. Very cheap versions should make you suspicious.

Safety and practitioner advice
Heerak Bhasma is not something to try because a relative or a video recommended it. Take it only if an experienced Ayurvedic physician prescribes it, and follow these precautions:
- Not for pregnant or breastfeeding women or children.
- Liver, kidney or heart conditions, high blood pressure or diabetes: your doctor must approve it first.
- Other medicines: tell both your Ayurvedic doctor and your regular doctor everything you take.
- Dose: extremely small and set by your doctor, usually given with honey, ghee or another prescribed anupana. Never adjust it yourself.
- Warning signs: stop and seek advice if you notice tremors, dizziness, stomach upset or an allergic reaction.
A good physician will also tell you how long the course should last and when to come back for review.
Storage
- Keep the container tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
- Keep it well out of children’s reach. At these doses, a small accidental amount is a large overdose for a child.
- Use a clean, dry spoon or the measure your doctor gives you. Moisture can spoil the powder.
- Keep the outer box with the batch number until you have finished the pack.
