When parents first hear about Swarna Prashan, it is usually in the form of drops: a small bottle of golden liquid, a dropper, and a clinic or relative explaining that a few drops are given on the tongue in the morning. For babies and toddlers, drops are the most common form, and they are the closest thing to how the practice is described in the old texts.

This guide is for parents who are considering Swarna Prashan drops. It covers what they are, how they differ from tablets, what to look for on the label, how age and dose are decided, and how to avoid fake or poor-quality packs.

What Swarna Prashan is

Swarna Prashan (स्वर्ण प्राशन) means “taking gold by mouth”. It is a traditional Ayurvedic practice in which children are given a very small amount of Swarna Bhasma, gold that has been purified and processed into a fine ash, together with cow ghee, honey and herbs that support the mind.

The practice is described in the Kashyapa Samhita, the classical Ayurvedic text on children’s health, in its chapter on Lehana (medicines given by licking). The text attributes several qualities to it, including support for intellect, digestion, strength, longevity and complexion. Today it is promoted mainly for immunity, memory and healthy growth.

Two honest caveats before going further:

  • These are traditional descriptions. Modern research on Swarna Prashan is limited and mostly small.
  • Swarna Prashan is a wellness practice. It is not a vaccine, it does not replace any vaccine, and it is not a treatment for any illness.

For the background on the custom itself, including the Pushya Nakshatra tradition, see Swarna Prashan Sanskar: Meaning, Traditional Method and Pushya Nakshatra Timing.

Drops vs tablets

Swarna Prashan comes in two main forms. Neither is “better” in every case. They suit different ages and routines.

Drops (liquid)Tablets
BaseGhee and honey, sometimes with herbal extractsCompressed powder with Swarna Bhasma and herbs

Drops are easier for very young children who cannot chew or swallow a tablet. The ghee and honey base also makes them pleasant to take. Tablets are more convenient for older children, especially when they need to take it before school.

We compare the two in more depth in Swarna Prashan Tablets vs Drops.

Ingredients to check on the label

A Swarna Prashan pack should tell you clearly what is inside. Turn the box over and look for:

What to look forWhy it matters
Swarna Bhasma, with quantityThis is the defining ingredient. If gold is not listed, it is not Swarna Prashan.
Medhya herbs such as Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, VachaThese are the brain-supporting herbs used in the classical method.
Cow ghee and honeyThe traditional base. Note that honey is not suitable for every infant (see below).
Any added sugar, flavour or preservativeWorth knowing, especially for young children.
Dose by ageA good pack gives drops per day for different age groups.
Manufacturer, licence number, batch, datesYour proof that it is a licensed Ayurvedic product.

Krishna Ayurveda Swarna Prashan, for example, lists Swarna Bhasma with Medhya herbs such as Brahmi, Vacha and Shankhpushpi, processed in cow ghee and honey.

A note about honey and babies

Modern paediatric advice is that babies under 12 months should not be given honey, because of the small risk of infant botulism. Many Swarna Prashan drops contain honey. This is one more reason why the decision to give Swarna Prashan to an infant, and which product to use, should be made with a doctor who knows your child.

Age and dose: why a doctor should decide

There is no single correct dose of Swarna Prashan for “children”. The amount depends on the child’s age and weight, on the product’s strength, and on whether it is given daily or monthly.

In general practice:

  • Clinics commonly give Swarna Prashan from infancy up to around 16 years.
  • Drops are counted by age, with fewer drops for younger children.
  • Some families give it daily at home. Others give it once a month on Pushya Nakshatra at a clinic.

But please treat these as background, not as a dosing guide. Ask an Ayurvedic paediatric doctor:

  1. Is my child the right age to start?
  2. How many drops, and how often?
  3. Daily, or on Pushya days only?
  4. Is it suitable given my child’s allergies, health or medicines?
  5. How long should we continue, and when should we review?

Also keep your child’s paediatrician informed. Most practitioners pause Swarna Prashan when a child is acutely unwell with fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, and restart afterwards.

How to give the drops

  • Give it in the morning on an empty stomach, which is the traditional time.
  • Shake the bottle if the label says so. Ghee-based drops can separate in cold weather. Warming the bottle slightly in your hand helps.
  • Place the drops on the child’s tongue so they lick it, rather than squirting it to the back of the throat.
  • Wait a little before feeding. Many practitioners suggest about half an hour, but follow your doctor.
  • Use the dropper that comes with the bottle and keep it clean and dry.

Safety notes

  • Never exceed the dose. More gold is not better.
  • Watch for reactions. Stop and see a doctor if your child has vomiting, a rash, unusual sleepiness or any other worrying change.
  • Allergies. If your child is allergic to dairy or honey, tell your doctor.
  • Storage. Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat and sunlight, and well out of children’s reach.
  • Do not make it at home. Homemade gold preparations are unsafe.

To understand the gold ingredient itself, our guide on Swarna Bhasma uses and side effects explains how it is made.

Buying an original pack

Because Swarna Prashan contains gold, it is not cheap, and fakes exist. Before buying:

  • check the seal on both the box and the bottle
  • look for the manufacturer’s name, drug licence number, batch number, manufacturing date and expiry
  • read the composition and confirm Swarna Bhasma is listed with its quantity
  • be suspicious of prices far below the brand’s usual price
  • buy from a licensed pharmacy or established store

We stock Krishna Ayurveda Swarna Prashan 10 g (listed at ₹1,589 in October 2026) and Dabur Swarna Prashan Tablets 30 tablets (₹1,750), both brand-sealed with batch and expiry printed. Prices can change, so check the product pages. Parents looking at children’s nutrition also often look at Patanjali Nutrela Kid’s Superfood.

Follow the dose for your child’s age printed on the pack, or the dose your Ayurvedic doctor gives you. Do not guess or increase it.
