Every month, a message does the rounds on parents’ WhatsApp groups: “Swarna Prashan on Pushya Nakshatra this week, bring your child to the clinic.” Many families now plan their child’s Swarna Prashan around these dates. But what exactly is Pushya Nakshatra, why is it linked with Swarna Prashan, and how do you know which date is right?

This guide explains the tradition and shows you how to check the dates yourself, instead of trusting a forwarded list.

Swarna Prashan in one paragraph

Swarna Prashan (स्वर्ण प्राशन) is the traditional Ayurvedic practice of giving children a very small amount of processed gold (Swarna Bhasma) with cow ghee, honey and mind-supporting herbs such as Brahmi and Shankhpushpi. It is described in the Kashyapa Samhita, the classical text on children’s health, and is traditionally used to support immunity, intellect and growth. It is not a vaccine and does not treat illness. Our main guide, Swarna Prashan Sanskar: Meaning, Traditional Method and Pushya Nakshatra Timing, covers the practice in full.

What is Pushya Nakshatra?

In the Hindu calendar, the sky along the Moon’s path is divided into 27 sections called nakshatras, or lunar mansions. The Moon passes through all 27 in roughly 27 days, spending about a day in each.

Pushya (पुष्य) is the eighth nakshatra. Its name comes from a root meaning “to nourish”, and it is traditionally considered one of the most auspicious nakshatras. Its ruling deity is Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, who is associated with wisdom and learning. Pushya is widely regarded as a good time to begin anything meant to nourish, protect or grow.

Because the Moon returns to Pushya about every 27 days, Pushya Nakshatra comes around roughly once a month. Occasionally the timing falls so that two Pushya days occur within one calendar month, or it starts late at night and runs into the next day.

Why Swarna Prashan is linked with Pushya

The connection comes from symbolism rather than from a specific rule in the classical text:

  • Nourishment. Pushya’s very meaning is “nourishing”, which fits a practice meant to nourish a child’s body and mind.
  • Wisdom. Brihaspati, Pushya’s deity, is linked with learning and intellect, and Swarna Prashan is traditionally given for medha (intellect).
  • A simple rhythm. A monthly date gives families and clinics an easy routine to follow.

It is worth being clear: the Kashyapa Samhita describes Swarna Prashan, but it does not say it must be given only on Pushya Nakshatra. The Pushya tradition grew later and is now the most common way clinics organise it. Some families instead give a small daily dose at home as directed on the pack.

How to check Swarna Prashan dates for your city

We deliberately do not publish a list of dates. Nakshatra timings change every month, and the start and end times depend on your location. A list copied from another city, or from last year, can easily be wrong. Here is how to check:

  1. Use a reliable panchang. Look up the Hindi or regional panchang for your city and month. Find “Pushya” in the nakshatra column. Many printed and online panchangs show the start and end time.
  2. Note the start and end time, not just the date. Pushya may begin in the afternoon of one day and end the next afternoon.
  3. Check with your clinic. Most Ayurvedic hospitals and clinics announce their next Pushya date in advance and follow a fixed convention.
  4. Morning matters. Swarna Prashan is traditionally given in the morning on an empty stomach. If Pushya starts late in the day, many clinics give it the next morning while Pushya is still running. Ask yours which approach they follow.
  5. Do not panic if you miss one. Missing a monthly Pushya date is not a problem. Simply continue at the next one, or ask your doctor.

A simple monthly routine

  • Mark the Pushya date and start time in your calendar at the start of each month.
  • Keep the Swarna Prashan pack ready and check its expiry.
  • On the morning, give it before the first feed or breakfast.
  • Note the date in a small record so you can track it over months.

Practitioner guidance comes first

Before you begin, speak to an Ayurvedic paediatric doctor, and keep your child’s paediatrician informed. They can tell you:

  • whether your child is the right age to start
  • whether a monthly Pushya dose or a daily dose suits your child better
  • the right product and number of drops or tablets
  • whether to skip a dose when your child is unwell
  • how long to continue and when to review

For babies under 12 months, take particular care, as many Swarna Prashan preparations contain honey, which is generally avoided in infants. Our guide Swarna Prashan Drops for Children: Traditional Use, Age Guidance and Safety covers age and safety in more detail.

Which product for Pushya days?

Clinics often use their own preparation, but many families prefer to give it at home with a licensed product:

Whichever you choose, buy a sealed pack with the batch number, dates and licence number printed, and confirm Swarna Bhasma is listed in the composition.
